It was built in 1891 by Wilson Brothers.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the station played an important part in the growth of commerce in the region during the coal and railroad boom era in Scranton and the Lackawanna Valley. It is described as one of the few remaining stations still standing in Scranton and as a fine example of the type of station once prevalent in the area.","narrative":"Built in 1891 by Wilson Brothers, this brick freight station stands on the banks of the Lackawanna River in Scranton. It is a basically rectangular structure with a tapering east end, a three-story western section with a hipped roof and dormers, and a two-story eastern section. Large round-arched openings with heavy radiating brick arches give it a Richardson Romanesque character, and a three-story circular tower with a conical roof rises at the northwest corner. The station was built during the period when coal from the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys was shipped by rail, and Scranton grew rapidly as a result. The Central Railroad of New Jersey extended its line from Wilkes-Barre to Scranton in 1886. The building is regarded as one of the few remaining stations still standing in Scranton and as a fine example of the type of station once common in northeastern Pennsylvania. Its first floor interior is largely unchanged, while the second floor has been converted to office use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wilson Brothers","architectural_style":"Richardson Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Many windows are boarded up, the eaves and roof are in an advanced state of decay, and the second floor has been altered for office space.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.142262-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/79002250.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002250/995988de32-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002250/995988de32-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_Railroad_of_New_Jersey_Freight_Station,_Scranton,_PA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_Railroad_of_New_Jersey_Freight_Station,_Scranton,_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998111","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scranton_station_(Central_Railroad_of_New_Jersey)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5061740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lackawanna-county/central-railroad-of-new-jersey-freight-station-79002250/"}
