It was erected in 1875 as the State Printing Office.","why_significant":"The building is noted for its 1875 Italianate-influenced tripartite design and for its ground floor, which retains its original appearance despite use as a store. The nomination also cites its association with the state printing and newspaper publishing businesses of the 19th century, and says it was probably Harrisburg's first high-rise.","narrative":"Built in 1875 as the State Printing Office, this six-story brick office block with a basement stands in downtown Harrisburg, one half block south of Market Street. Its design follows the tripartite arrangement then popular, with Italianate touches in the bracketed wood cornice and the scrolled concrete window moldings and lintels. The building housed state printing, binding and lithography work, and later the Star-Independent newspaper, which moved in on June 5, 1897. In 1917 the interior was gutted and rebuilt with a structural steel frame and 12-inch reinforced floors, while the five-course brick walls were kept. The nomination regards it as probably Harrisburg's first high-rise, predating the USF&G Building of 1905. Its street level remains close to its original form, which is uncommon for office buildings of this age that have plate glass storefronts.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Louis Sullivan Tripartite design with Italianate influences","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Altered; remodeled in 1917 into an office building and later renamed the Keystone Building; ground floor used as a store.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.287424-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/79002217.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002217/4a6981c3fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002217/4a6981c3fc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keystone_Building_Nov_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keystone_Building_Nov_10.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83002238","name":"Old Downtown Harrisburg Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/old-downtown-harrisburg-commercial-historic-district-83002238/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995781","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystone_Building_(Harrisburg,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6398450"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/dauphin-county/keystone-building-79002217/"}
