It is also associated with local legends and with its use as a tavern serving travellers crossing the mountain.","narrative":"Built around 1793 of squared native Tuscarora sandstone and finished in white stucco, this one and a half story tavern stands about 1,100 feet up the side of Hawk Mountain, beside an old Indian trail. Its roof is a medium gable with dual shed dormers at the rear, and its interior has two rooms with plaster walls, pine moulding and exposed beams, most of them original. Early records describe it as a tavern serving travellers between the Great Valley and the western settlements. It was acquired in 1851 by Matthais Schaumboch and his wife Becky, who catered to farmers, hucksters, quarry workers and teamsters hauling anthracite. Local legends about murders attributed to Schaumboch gave the building its popular name. The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association acquired it in 1938 and has kept its appearance largely unchanged, apart from lighting, heating and plumbing.","period_of_significance":"c.1793","architect_builder":"Jacob Gerhardt","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained by the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association as a residence for sanctuary personnel; in excellent and sound condition with the original floor plan unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.791354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/79002166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002166/be53d38a91-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002166/be53d38a91-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schaumbocks_Tavern_1_BerksCo_PA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schaumbocks_Tavern_1_BerksCo_PA.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100007555","name":"Hawk Mountain Sanctuary District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/hawk-mountain-sanctuary-district-100007555/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995736","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schaumboch%27s_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7430995"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/berks-county/schaumbochs-tavern-79002166/"}
