It was built about 1829-30 for farmer Edmund Robinson and reportedly served as a tavern.","why_significant":"The house is a significant element of the historic landscape along S.R. 48, once a major road between Lebanon and Dayton. It housed several farmers in the 19th century and, by local tradition, operated as a tavern. It is also an excellent example of pre-Victorian rural vernacular brick architecture in southwestern Ohio, with an unusual cast iron canopy over the main door.","narrative":"Along State Route 48 north of Lebanon, Ohio, stands a two-story white-painted brick house built around 1829-30 for Edmund Robinson, a New Jersey native and early farmer in Clearcreek Township. He built it on his 104-acre farm to take advantage of traffic on the Dayton Road, opened in 1820. Local tradition holds that the house also served as a tavern, and a side porch has an entrance presumably used for it. The five-bay facade is plain and symmetrical, with brick lintels, stone sills and small dentil work at the cornice. Its most unusual feature is a cast iron canopy over the central door with curving, naturalistic forms. Inside, a central hall with a cherry stairway divides two rooms on each side. Three outbuildings stand to the southeast. Later 19th-century farmers continued to farm the land and operate the tavern. The house was rehabilitated in the late 1950s and is valued as an example of antebellum vernacular architecture in southwestern Ohio.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Antebellum vernacular (pre-Victorian rural vernacular brick)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; rehabilitated in the late 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.744507-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001974.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991843","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138754632"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/warren-county/robinson-edmund-house-79001974/"}
