The farmhouse, tenant cottage, bank barn and carriage barn look today as they were shown in the 1877 Atlas of Union County.","narrative":"Elmwood Place is a nineteenth-century farm east of Irwin in Union County, Ohio. The complex includes a large brick farmhouse, a carriage barn, a tenant cottage, a bank barn and two small frame outbuildings. James Fullington, a large property owner who bought the land in 1866, built the house, which is believed to have been finished in 1868, with the other buildings in place by 1877. The farmhouse rises two and a half stories on a stone foundation under a slate roof, with a round arched entrance, paired round arched windows, a bracketed porch and eave brackets in the Italianate manner. Inside, the woodwork, mantels and spiral staircase remain intact. The farmhouse, cottage and barns match their depiction in the 1877 county atlas. Large trees, brick walks and white picket fences add to a well-preserved rural setting. The property was listed for its architecture and its agricultural significance as an excellent example of a nineteenth-century Ohio farm.","period_of_significance":"1868","architect_builder":"James Fullington","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and the property is occupied; the interior of the house is described as virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.098376-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001972.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001972/41f7cc24c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001972/41f7cc24c9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmwood_Place_farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmwood_Place_farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991779","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmwood_Place_(Irwin,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5366992"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/union-county/elmwood-place-79001972/"}
