Market Street in Navarre, Stark County, Ohio, built in 1850 near the Ohio and Erie Canal right-of-way.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a distinctive example of Greek Revival commercial architecture in Ohio, with a molded raking cornice, molded entablature and gable end returns. It also represents the commercial life of Navarre, a canal-era wheat shipping town, and the immigrant history of the Italy Hill neighborhood.","narrative":"Built in 1850 at 202 S. Market Street in Navarre, Ohio, this 2 1/2 story brick building served as both a grocery store and a home. It has a cut stone foundation, a slate gabled roof, a storefront with a large plate-glass window and transom, and a symmetrical arrangement of openings with stone lintels. Its molded entablature and gable end returns mark it as a Greek Revival commercial building. Navarre was a major wheat shipping center on the Ohio and Erie Canal, with 12 elevators, 11 hotels and 10 dry goods stores at its peak. Few buildings of this style and scale remain. John Loew, a justice of the peace, acquired the property in the 1860s, and a trial there in 1867 reportedly involved the young lawyer William McKinley. The store ran as Loew & Son into the early 20th century, then passed to James D. Define, son of an Italian immigrant, linking it to the neighborhood known as Italy Hill.","period_of_significance":"1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the form records the building as altered and in fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.463001-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001954.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001954/3d034441c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001954/3d034441c8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Loew-Define_Grocery_Store_and_Home_(Navarre,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Loew-Define_Grocery_Store_and_Home_(Navarre,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991392","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138685644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/loew-define-grocery-store-and-home-79001954/"}
