The school's success led to the platting of the village of South Salem in 1846 and to houses built for students. Many notable figures attended, including Joseph Benson Foraker, later a Senator and Governor of Ohio.","narrative":"Built in 1842 of locally quarried limestone, this two-story Federal-style academy on Church Street in South Salem, Ohio, was raised by members of the Presbyterian congregation, who pledged two thousand dollars in cash, materials and services. Rev. Hugh Stewart Fullerton called the meeting that launched the project. The school opened in 1843 as a classical, mathematical, scientific and English school preparing students for college, training teachers and offering Christian instruction. Its success led John Sample to plat the village of South Salem in 1846, and houses were built for students. Notable students included Joseph Benson Foraker, later Senator and Governor of Ohio. Control passed to the Chillicothe Presbytery in 1859 and to Buckskin Township in 1907, later joining the Greenfield schools. The building has five bays across the front, a cupola with the original bell, and later cement block additions. It has served as a library, cafeteria and shop. The original woodwork, fireplaces and stairwell remain.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Rev. Hugh Stewart Fullerton & the parishioners of the So.
