It is L-shaped and sits on a landscaped residential lot near the central business district.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of Gothic Revival domestic architecture in Circleville, with its multiple gables, decorative bargeboards and multi-patterned slate roof. The intricate bargeboards show a high level of craftsmanship. It is also noted as among the best Gothic Revival examples in a community rich in 19th-century styles.","narrative":"Built in 1865 by Samuel Morris, this brick house at 149 West Union Street in Circleville is regarded as one of the community's best examples of Gothic Revival domestic architecture. The L-shaped house rests on a stone foundation and has intersecting gable roofs and gabled dormers covered in multi-patterned slate. First-floor windows and the entrance have segmental arches, while second-story windows are round-arched, all with double-row brick hoodmoulds. The delicate, lacy bargeboards on the gables and dormers are a standout feature and show the craftsmanship of the builders. Original shutters, plaster, wide plank hardwood floors and four mantels survive inside the seven-room interior. Morris helped organize the Third National Bank and later served as its president. The house stayed in his family until 1922. It sits on a landscaped lot close to downtown and was being carefully restored when nominated.","period_of_significance":"1865","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by Samuel Morris, per the statement of significance)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and being carefully restored by a new owner; the form checks private residence as present use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.213417-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001926.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001926/a2e900f666-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001926/a2e900f666-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morris_House,_Circleville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morris_House,_Circleville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990901","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_House_(Circleville,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716728"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/morris-house-79001926/"}
