It is an excellent, little-altered example of Gothic Revival domestic architecture in Circleville. It was built by Colonel Anderson, an important local citizen known as a scholar, collector of Indian artifacts and civic leader.","narrative":"Built about 1865, this brick house at 131 West Union Street in Circleville, Ohio, is a local example of Gothic Revival domestic design. It rises 2 1/2 stories on a modified T-shaped plan under an intersecting gabled roof. The three-bay facade has a pointed arch window and gable over the entrance, which has tall double walnut doors with beveled glass. Round arched windows with brick hoodmoulds, and an ornate porch with octagonal columns and bracketed cornice, add to the detail. Inside, a curved staircase with a cherry banister and plaster friezes survive in excellent condition. A two-story brick wash and carriage house is attached. The house was built by Colonel William Marshall Anderson, born in Kentucky in 1807, who was known as a scholar, naturalist and collector of Indian artifacts. He served as president of the Circleville Board of Education and as first president of the public library board. Local architect William Doane may have designed it.","period_of_significance":"C. 1865","architect_builder":"possible William Doane","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as excellent, with the interior described as virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.27205-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001925.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001925/3a8d15c1dd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001925/3a8d15c1dd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Marshall_Anderson_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Marshall_Anderson_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002171","name":"Circleville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/circleville-historic-district-78002171/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990899","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Marshall_Anderson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8015162"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/anderson-william-marshall-house-79001925/"}
