It was built for George Willison Adams.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is the oldest known surviving example of pure Greek Revival architecture in northern Muskingum County. Other early buildings in Dresden are vernacular, while this one has the block-like massing, gable-end orientation, pediment and trim of the Greek Revival. It is also tied to Adams, a miller, legislator, bridge builder and the area's largest landholder.","narrative":"Built around 1842 on Bottom Road between Dresden and Trinway, this wood-frame house is a temple-form Greek Revival dwelling. It rests on a tooled sandstone foundation and is clad in clapboards. The gable end faces south, with a three-bay facade, a pediment with full cornice returns, six-over-six windows and an offset entrance with transom and sidelights. A slate roof covers it. Inside, an open-string stair and the original woodwork survive. An early rear wing was removed and a side porch enclosed, but the form finds the character intact. The house was built for George W. Adams (1800-1879), a miller and legislator who became the area's leading industrialist. In 1850 he built a toll suspension bridge over the Muskingum River at Dresden, and he came to own more than 14,000 acres. He moved to a larger Italianate villa in 1856 but kept this house. It is considered the oldest known pure Greek Revival building in northern Muskingum County.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (temple-form)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition; an early rear section was removed and a side porch enclosed, but the form says its character and integrity remain.
