It is the only stone structure in Clay Township and one of few in the county, at a time when most houses were log or frame. It is also tied to the founding of Clay Township, since the first township election was held at the home of Adam Rider, Sr. in 1841.","narrative":"Built in 1831 by Adam Rider and his son Mathias, this 2½-story sandstone house near Roseville in Muskingum County, Ohio, replaced the family's earlier hewn log dwelling. Its random ashlar walls, keystoned stone lintels and an I-house plan with a central hall and open string stair mark it as a vernacular building with Federal and neo-classical touches. It is the only stone structure in Clay Township and one of few in the county, where log and frame houses were the norm. The house also has a place in local government history: when Clay Township was carved from Brush Creek Township in 1841, the first elections were held at Adam Rider's home. The Rider family farmed the land, mined coal and took part in the local pottery trade, and kept the property until 1967. A 1933 wood frame addition and porch were added, but the interior retains original plaster, doors and a large kitchen fireplace with a classical mantel.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Adam & Mathias Rider, builders","architectural_style":"Vernacular, with neo-classical mantel and Federal-style keystoned lintels","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; described as in very good repair with integrity not compromised by unsympathetic alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.640576-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001911.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001911/9043b5f333-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001911/9043b5f333-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Rider_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Rider_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990737","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138640436"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/muskingum-county/rider-adam-house-79001911/"}
