Survey work in Dayton found no other Chateauesque building executed on such a grand scale in the city. Its steeply hipped tile roof and unusual oval dormer windows are the most notable features.","narrative":"Built about 1911 at 42 Yale Avenue in Dayton, this brick mansion was designed in the Flemish mode of the Chateauesque style. It has a three-bay facade with advancing end pavilions, stone quoins, pedimented wall dormers, a stone neo-classical porch on the south side and a porte-cochere on the north. A very steep tile hip roof is set with distinctive oval dormers. Inside, a large hall retains much of its original woodwork and paneling. Louis Traxler, an Austrian-born merchant who came to Dayton in 1899, bought the property in 1909 and lived here until 1929. Later owners included a plumbing company president and bank officer, then a salesman and restaurateur. The house was divided into apartments during the war and became a boarding house in 1941. Multiple occupancy and vandalism caused heavy damage, and restoration was under way. It was listed because local survey work found no comparable Chateauesque house of such grandeur elsewhere in Dayton.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Chateauesque (Flemish mode)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Partially restored after damage from multiple occupancy and vandalism; described as again threatened and up for sale, with first-floor windows boarded.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.110717-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001903.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84003787","name":"Dayton View Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/dayton-view-historic-district-84003787/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990394","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/traxler-mansion-79001903/"}
