Carmel Church is a brick building with a gable roof and stone foundation in Youngstown, Ohio. Its facade is dominated by a slightly projecting bell tower, with a pedimented entrance supported by polished marble Ionic columns and a sculpted roundel of the Madonna above the main doors. The octagonal belfry carries a slightly pointed cupola. The congregation formed in 1908 and met in the basement of another church until a lot was bought in 1910. Italian community leaders organized immigrants from the valley into a work force to build it. Services were held in the basement under a temporary roof until the full building was finished in 1913. Fire destroyed the interior in June 1922, and it was rebuilt the next year. The design blends Italian baroque features with Georgian Revival forms. It is the only church left in the city from the era of Italian immigration to the Mahoning Valley. Additions were made in 1963 and 1971.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian baroque combined with American Georgian Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied, in religious use; condition listed as good and altered, with additions in 1963 and 1971.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.873806-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001893.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001893/5383cecb3f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001893/5383cecb3f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Lady_of_Mount_Carmel,_Youngstown.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Lady_of_Mount_Carmel,_Youngstown.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990102","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_Our_Lady_of_Mount_Carmel_(Youngstown,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7110908"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mahoning-county/our-lady-of-mount-carmel-church-79001893/"}
