Construction began in 1827, and it was consecrated in August 1828 by Bishop Philander Chase. Land and money came from Elijah Boardman, a U.S. Senator and member of the Connecticut Land Company, and his son Henry Mason Boardman oversaw the work. A congregation had been meeting in the township since 1807. In 1881 a $3,000 remodeling added cruciform wings, Victorian fretwork, stained glass windows and an open belfry with a slate-roofed steeple. A memorial window to Elijah and Mary Ann Boardman was brought from New Milford, Connecticut. When a shopping mall threatened the building in 1972, residents and local groups raised over $45,000 to move it to Boardman Township Park, a hillside setting resembling its original surroundings. It is the only remaining historic public building in the township and remains a center of community activity.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Moved in 1972 to Boardman Township Park; described as excellent condition, occupied, and still a center of community activity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:13.024223-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001892.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001892/0d79b501bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001892/0d79b501bb-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_James_ECUSA_in_Boardman_Park.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_James_ECUSA_in_Boardman_Park.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990122","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James_Episcopal_Church_(Boardman,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588471"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mahoning-county/st-james-episcopal-church-79001892/"}
