Walnut Street in Newark, Licking County, Ohio, built in 1880 by the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an important architectural landmark in Newark and one of two railroad stations that served the city. It is described as ornate and fanciful, and it was not built to a standard plan as many nineteenth-century stations were. Its name comes from the Pennsylvania Railroad, which leased the line.","narrative":"Built in 1880 at 25 E. Walnut Street in Newark, Ohio, this railroad station was erected by the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. The Pennsylvania Railroad later leased the line, which gave the station its name. The route through Newark was known as the Panhandle route because it crossed the northern panhandle of West Virginia on its way to Pittsburgh. The single-story brick building rests on a battered sandstone foundation and has a gable roof, a central projecting entrance bay with classical-style columns, stone lintels, and dark brick bands. The waiting room remains largely intact, with a hammerbeam truss roof and wainscoting. The brick driveway, walks, and underpass to the boarding platform survive. Unlike many nineteenth-century stations, it was not built to a standard plan, and it was one of two stations serving the city. At the time of listing it was being adapted for use as a restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1880","architect_builder":"Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; the building was undergoing adaptation to a restaurant at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:11.881545-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001881.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001881/6fdf125ed5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001881/6fdf125ed5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pennsylvania_Railway_Station_Newark_Ohio.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pennsylvania_Railway_Station_Newark_Ohio.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989728","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138461054"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/licking-county/pennsylvania-railway-station-79001881/"}
