Abram Garfield, a Cleveland architect and son of President James Garfield, donated the plans for a \"New England Colonial\" design. His brother James R. Garfield was the first president of the library association, which had grown from an 1875 organization and was incorporated in 1895. The building has Flemish bond brick walls, a five-bay east facade, a pedimented entrance with Doric pilasters and columns, and chimneys centered on the end walls. In 1927 the school board took over the library and renamed it for James R. Garfield. It was moved about two blocks in 1961 and converted to offices, with the interior altered by glass partitions. It is valued as one of the few institutional buildings by Abram Garfield and as a fine small Classic Revival example in Mentor.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Abram Garfield","architectural_style":"Classic Revival (described in the original plans as \"New England Colonial\")","criteria":[],"status_note":"Moved in 1961 from the corner of Mentor and Center and refurbished as an office building; condition listed as excellent and the building is occupied, with the interior modified by glass partitions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.00332-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001872.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001872/6d70e76b34-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001872/6d70e76b34-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garfield_Library.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garfield_Library.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989579","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138448284"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/garfield-library-79001872/"}
