Its design is attributed to noted Cincinnati architect James Keys Wilson. The asymmetrical plan, crenellated tower and Gothic interior details are emphasized.","narrative":"Built around 1854 on a plateau above the Ohio River, this brick house on Madison Road in Cincinnati is a large Gothic Revival residence. John S. Baker, who came to Cincinnati from New Jersey in 1814, built it on a site then set in a rural suburb. The design is attributed to Cincinnati architect James Keys Wilson, who was assisted by Baker's son Nathan, a local sculptor who later bought many of the interior furnishings in Europe. The asymmetrical facades feature a three-story tower with a battlement, stone coping, pinnacles, pointed-arch windows and quatrefoil tracery. Inside, cast iron balustrades, marble fireplaces and ceilings with foliated molding continue the Gothic theme. A sympathetic addition dates from 1909, and the grounds include a board-and-batten studio and a c. 1890 servants' residence. A local inventory identified it as the city's only residential example showing this range of Gothic Revival detail, which is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"James Keys Wilson","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; the studio and servants' quarters are used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.58167-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001852.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001852/ed19fca95e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001852/ed19fca95e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JohnBakerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JohnBakerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988893","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_S._Baker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6256165"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/baker-john-s-house-79001852/"}
