East Street in Washington Courthouse, Fayette County, Ohio, built in 1875 for local merchant Barney Kelley. The builders are listed as L.C. & B.S. Coffman and Amos Cooke.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is architecturally significant as a well-preserved late nineteenth-century residence with an unusual treatment of Italianate characteristics. It is historically significant as the home of Barney Kelley, a prominent local merchant, and reflects the town's prosperity from the 1870s to the 1890s.","narrative":"Built in 1875, this two-story brick house on East Street in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, was the home of Barney Kelley, an Irish-born merchant who settled in town in the 1860s after the railroad arrived. The square main block has a hipped roof, a rear brick kitchen wing, and a balustraded front porch with Ionic and Doric columns. Round-arched second-story windows with keystones, rusticated quoins, a paired bracketed cornice and a gable dormer with a small circular window give it an unusual Italianate character. A local newspaper of the time called it a splendid brick mansion. The house reflects a period of prosperity in Washington Courthouse from the 1870s to the 1890s, when many fine residences were built. Thomas Craig of the Craig Brothers Department Store bought it in 1896, and it stayed in his family for 79 years. It remains well preserved, with original woodwork and mantels, and is enclosed by an iron fence.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"L.C. & B.S.
