Its polychrome effect from combined brick and sandstone, carved cornice, stained glass and detailed interior furnishings add to its architectural value. As the tallest structure in Lancaster, it is also an important local landmark.","narrative":"St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church occupies the corner of Broad and Mulberry Streets in Lancaster, Ohio, in a mainly residential area near the central business district. Its cornerstone was laid in 1879 and the building was dedicated in 1882. Built of four course American bond brick on an ashlar sandstone foundation, it has two square towers flanking a central entrance, with the taller west tower topped by a pyramidal roof, octagonal spire and Latin cross. Contrasting brick and sandstone in the arches, buttress caps and first story create a polychrome effect, and the cornice carries quatrefoil carving. Inside, the altar and pulpit are hand carved and highlighted in gold leaf, and the stained glass is well preserved. The congregation was organized in 1816, and this is its fourth church, after a log building and two brick ones. A two story rear addition was completed in 1925. As the tallest structure in town, the church is a well known local landmark.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in religious use; the interior is described as in excellent condition and the church as well maintained and nearly intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.209697-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001831.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001831/4aa306f10b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001831/4aa306f10b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Peter%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_Lancaster_Ohio.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Peter%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_Lancaster_Ohio.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83003438","name":"Lancaster Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/lancaster-historic-district-83003438/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988195","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_(Lancaster,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fairfield-county/st-peters-evangelical-lutheran-church-79001831/"}
