The house is said to retain integrity of location, design, setting, materials, feeling and association.","narrative":"This large frame house on Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls is a local example of Greek Revival design. The two-story main block measures 24 by 30 feet, with a one-and-a-half story wing and a 1930s rear addition. Its gable-end facade has a Greek frieze and cornice with eaves returns, and the windows are six-over-six sash. Inside, the cellar joists are bark-covered logs, and much of the original small-pane glass survives. The 1.5-acre property also holds an outhouse, a workshed and a barn that was reassembled on the site in the early 20th century. The house appears on an 1858 county map. It was linked to the Lay family, who arrived in the village in the 1850s. John Lay served as mayor in 1862, and Samuel Jr. and Joseph ran a factory making farm implements, rakes, scythes and cheese boxes. Joseph also invented a splint broom. The house is valued for its architecture and for these associations.","period_of_significance":"1858","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as a private residence with a 1.5-acre lot; the owners have exposed original plaster in several rooms after mid-20th-century fiber board paneling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.670354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001814.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001814/df4d4f4dea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001814/df4d4f4dea-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Lay_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Lay_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"00000798","name":"Olmsted Falls Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/olmsted-falls-historic-district-00000798/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987699","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137734612"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/lay-samuel-house-79001814/"}
