It was run by an important Czech-American musical family. The building is also an elegant small example of Renaissance revival architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1917 at 5417 Broadway in Cleveland, this two-story masonry building housed the Hruby Conservatory of Music, a fixture of Czech-American cultural life for fifty years. Frank J. Hruby, who arrived in Cleveland as an infant, founded the school. He, his father and siblings toured as a musical group, and several relatives later played in the Cleveland Orchestra. The conservatory taught students from across the city until his retirement in 1968, so its reach extended beyond the surrounding Czech neighborhood. Architects Steffens & Steffens gave the building a Renaissance revival design, with terra cotta window surrounds, quoins, a cornice and finials above a commercial ground floor. Upstairs are a large recital hall, ten instructional studios and a grand staircase. It stands near the Broadway Branch library and not far from Bohemian National Hall, and is described as the most refined building in the former Czech district. The property was vacant when nominated.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1917)","architect_builder":"Steffens & Steffens","architectural_style":"Renaissance revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant at the time of nomination (1979); the conservatory operated until Frank Hruby's retirement in 1968.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.982461-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001807.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001807/3aaac4b7ca-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001807/3aaac4b7ca-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"stu_spivack","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hruby_Conservatory_of_Music.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">stu_spivack</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hruby_Conservatory_of_Music.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987735","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hruby_Conservatory_of_Music","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16892536"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/hruby-conservatory-of-music-79001807/"}
