It was built for Edward Adams, a pioneer-family landowner and grain mill merchant. Two cast-iron fireplace firefronts depicting Mazeppa, made at the Union Foundry in Zanesville, were praised by architectural historian I.T. Frary.","narrative":"Built in 1840, this wood frame house in the village of Adams' Mills, once called Preston, sits on a vermiculated sandstone foundation, and the Coshocton County line runs through its rear ell. It has a five-bay facade, a trabeated entrance with transom and sidelights, a Tuscan-columned portico, and a slate gable roof. Inside are fifteen rooms, nine fireplaces, a walnut-balustrade stair and original eight-panel doors. Edward Adams, a landowner and merchant, had it built near his grain mill, which relied on the nearby Ohio-Erie Canal to ship flour. The Adams family later sold it, and it passed to the Gray family, who farmed there until 1961. It is considered the only Classical Revival house in the village and among the best of its style in northern Muskingum County. Two cast-iron firefronts depicting Mazeppa, made at Zanesville's Union Foundry, drew praise from historian I.T. Frary for their workmanship.","period_of_significance":"1840","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a private residence in excellent condition and altered; the barn is used as an antique retail store.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.100068-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001797.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001797/b8235adb67-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001797/b8235adb67-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams-Gray_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams-Gray_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000025","name":"Muskingum River Navigation Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/muskingum-river-navigation-historic-district-07000025/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987285","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adams%E2%80%93Gray_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4680276"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/coshocton-county/adams-gray-house-79001797/"}
