Buildings date from about 1845 to 1880.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the complex is an excellent and unusually complete grouping of 19th-century institutional buildings, rare among Ohio counties. It illustrates utilitarian vernacular institutional design and the county's care of its indigent and mentally ill residents. Architecture and social/humanitarian history are the areas of significance.","narrative":"Columbiana County Infirmary is a group of four brick buildings and a small stone storage structure on a rise west of Lisbon, Ohio. Three buildings face a grassy courtyard: a superintendent's house of about 1845, a T-shaped main building of 1861, and an 1873 building for the insane. A boiler house of 1880 sits across the county road. The county bought a 200-acre farm in 1829, believing farm labor suited its indigent and mentally ill residents. A poor house was built, then replaced in stages as needs grew, and by 1872 an institution of wider scope was developed. Residents usually numbered over 100. The buildings follow no recognizable architectural style, but they show the plain, practical forms typical of 19th-century institutions, and few Ohio counties retain so complete a set. The property is county-owned and was vacant when listed.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No identifiable style; utilitarian vernacular institutional buildings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and unoccupied; the 1880 boiler house is still operable to heat the complex with steam.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.849294-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79001795.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001795/0931556c22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001795/0931556c22-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbiana_County_Infirmary.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbiana_County_Infirmary.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987236","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbiana_County_Infirmary","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5149953"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/columbiana-county/columbiana-county-infirmary-79001795/"}
