South Street, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, built around 1855 for Sion Hart Rogers.","why_significant":"The house is a distinctive example of Greek Revival architecture with Italianate accents and one of the few surviving antebellum buildings in the original city limits of Raleigh. It is also tied to a series of prominent residents: Sion Hart Rogers, Major William H. Bagley, Josephus Daniels, and Dr. Albert W. Pegues, a noted Black educator at Shaw University.","narrative":"Built around 1855 on the northwest corner of Blount and East South Streets in Raleigh, this boxy frame house combines Greek Revival design with Italianate touches. Its low hip roof, scrolled S-shaped brackets, carved anthemions, and a fluted-pilaster corner treatment give it unusual detail. Inside, a center hall is divided by a doorway and screen with sidelights and a carved anthemion and honeysuckle frieze. Sion Hart Rogers, a congressman and North Carolina attorney general, built it. Major William H. Bagley, a state senator and clerk of the state Supreme Court, bought it in 1873; his son Worth Bagley was the first American officer killed in the Spanish-American War. His son-in-law Josephus Daniels, the newspaper editor, later Navy secretary and ambassador to Mexico, lived there, and his son Jonathan was born in the house. In 1919 it passed to Albert W. Pegues, a Black educator at Shaw University. It is one of few antebellum buildings left in the area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Sion Hart Rogers (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Italianate accents","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition, with some exterior and interior alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.802002-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7225/47722539/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001759.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001759/9c1fe733e4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001759/9c1fe733e4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90001527","name":"East Raleigh-South Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/east-raleigh-south-park-historic-district-90001527/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722539","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21016134"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/rogers-bagley-daniels-pegues-house-79001759/"}
