It was built in 1884 and remodeled in 1908 in the Neo-Classical Revival style.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the courthouse as a good example of the mature public building style of architect Frank P. Milburn, who designed many early twentieth century courthouses in North Carolina. The 1908 remodeling gave it a symmetrical facade with a monumental brick-columned portico. It also serves as the county's seat of justice, built soon after the county was formed in 1881.","narrative":"Vance County's courthouse stands one block west of downtown Henderson. Court sessions were held in rented buildings after the county's formation in 1881, until a courthouse of white brick was completed in 1884. Captain J. R. Thrower of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad designed it, and W. R. Kivett built it for about $8,000. In 1908 the Washington firm of Milburn and Heister remodeled it so thoroughly that it no longer resembles the original. Architect Frank P. Milburn gave it a Neo-Classical Revival look: a symmetrical facade, a monumental portico on brick columns, segmental arched first-floor windows, taller linteled windows above, and a modillion cornice. Inside, a wide center hall divides the first-floor offices, which keep a high wainscot and paneled doors. The courtroom has been remodeled completely. The building is considered a good example of Milburn's mature public building style, and it is among his many courthouse designs across North Carolina.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Original 1884 design by Captain J.
