Its central chimney and double-gallery porch combine northern and coastal Carolina influences. It also retains much original interior fabric and represents a substantial early farm dwelling.","narrative":"Near Pisgah Forest in Transylvania County, this two-story timber frame house was built around 1832 for William Deaver, a prosperous farmer whose estate once reached about 300 acres in a region of much smaller farms. Clad in weathered clapboards with a fieldstone foundation and a gable roof, it has a large central brick chimney and a double-gallery porch across the front. Inside, two rooms flank the chimney in saddlebag fashion, and much of the original wide sheathing, chair rail, doors, strap hinges and locks survives. The central chimney may reflect the family's Pennsylvania roots, while the porch recalls coastal Carolina practice. Local tradition holds that Deaver was shot at the door in 1865 by brigands seeking his Confederate officer son. Deaver descendants kept the house until the mid-twentieth century, and it once served as the Davidson River post office. A gambrel-roofed barn of about 1900 and a garden remain on the surviving 2.3 acres, which are surrounded by newer housing. The house is still a private residence.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1832","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Retardataire Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains in use as a private residence; condition marked fair; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.321409-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7223/47722361/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001755.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001755/fc71c72306-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001755/fc71c72306-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allison-Deaver_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allison-Deaver_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722361","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Deaver_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708429"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/deaver-william-house-79001755/"}
