The complex has the mill building and four twentieth-century shed outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the mill is one of the last remaining unspoiled water-powered custom grist mills in North Carolina and represents the rural milling of flour, meal and feed. The building also shows early heavy frame and later balloon frame construction side by side. Its continued near-daily operation adds to its educational value.","narrative":"Morgan's Mill is a water-powered grist mill on Morgan Mill Creek, about six miles west of Brevard in Transylvania County, North Carolina. Built around 1855, it has run almost continuously since then and was the last operating water-powered grist mill in the county when nominated. The mill building has three parts: an original 20-foot-square heavy frame core with mortised, tenoned and pegged timbers, a late nineteenth-century balloon frame addition, and a mid-twentieth-century shed and porch section. Inside are two sets of French burr stones, a flour bolter and a system of iron gears, pulleys and belts, much of it probably original. A 30-foot iron overshot wheel replaced the wooden one around 1915. Four small storage and utility sheds stand nearby. It was listed because it is one of the few surviving examples of rural custom milling in North Carolina and shows two framing techniques in one building. School groups visit it for educational purposes.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1855","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in almost continuous operation since about 1855 and still operated almost daily at the time of nomination; condition marked fair and slightly altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.954961-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7223/47722355/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001753.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722355","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan%27s_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987182"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/morgans-mill-79001753/"}
