J. (also given as James) Hughes on the site of the 1855 courthouse.","why_significant":"It is presented as a fine example of the emerging sophistication of the Neo-Classical Revival style, with design elements that anticipate Harry Barton's later Guilford, Johnston and Cumberland county courthouses. It replaced an inadequate 1855 building after a judge threatened county commissioners with indictment.","narrative":"Dominating the commercial buildings around its large square in Dobson, this three-story tan brick courthouse was completed in 1916 for Surry County at a cost of about $98,000. It replaced an 1855 courthouse that grand juries had found badly deteriorated, unheated and without toilet or sewer facilities. After the county commissioners ignored repeated complaints, a Superior Court judge ordered a new building and warned of indictment. Greensboro architect Harry Barton and R. J. Hughes designed it in the Neo-Classical Revival style. The five-bay front and rear elevations match, each with a central entrance flanked by pairs of Ionic pilasters, a wide ashlar frieze and an overhanging modillion cornice. Two-story wings were added in 1971 in matching materials, and the interior was reorganized, though original details such as dentil molding, mosaic tile floors with a Greek key border, marble baseboards and iron balustrades remain. Its design is seen as a forerunner of Barton's later courthouses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Harry Barton and R. J.
