It is one of three identical Wheeler and Runge designs built in 1904, and it dominates and anchors the county seat town. Its interior remains largely unaltered since 1904.","narrative":"Danbury's Stokes County Courthouse is a brick building completed in 1904 on a landscaped hillside that forms the core of the town. Charlotte architect Wheeler designed it in the Beaux Arts Neo-Classical Revival style, and it cost roughly $74,000 including annexes and wings. A tetrastyle Ionic portico fronts a three-story hipped-roof core, and an unusual oblong mansard cupola rises directly behind it. Identical Wheeler and Runge designs were built in 1904 in Ashe and Watauga counties, and this courthouse is one of six surviving Wheeler courthouses of the period. One-story wings and a rear addition were added in 1940 with a Works Progress Administration grant, handled so carefully that they are nearly indistinguishable from the original work. Inside, a long first-floor hall, paneled wainscot, an ungated courtroom gallery, a pressed tin ceiling and original furnishings survive. The courthouse replaced an 1851 building and continues to serve the county.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wheeler of Charlotte (Wheeler and Runge)","architectural_style":"Beaux Arts Neo-Classical Revival with Second Empire cupola","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as the county courthouse; 1940 WPA-funded wings and rear addition match the original closely.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.430253-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/7184/47718477/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001750.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001750/72ddeac832-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001750/72ddeac832-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Calvin Beale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stokes_County_Courthouse,_Danbury_(Stokes_County,_North_Carolina).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Calvin Beale</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stokes_County_Courthouse,_Danbury_(Stokes_County,_North_Carolina).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001686","name":"Danbury Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/danbury-historic-district-86001686/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718477","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stokes_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7618528"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/stokes-county/stokes-county-courthouse-79001750/"}
