It replaced a courthouse that burned in 1910 and still dominates the Greenville skyline. Much of its original interior fabric survives despite a 1948 renovation.","narrative":"Pitt County's courthouse in downtown Greenville was built in 1910 after fire destroyed its predecessor. County officials hired Milburn and Heister, a Washington, D.C. architectural firm that designed eleven North Carolina county courthouses. It is a three-story tan brick building in the Neo-Classical Revival style, set on an ashlar base. Features associated with the firm's work include an Ionic portico, a dentil and modillion cornice under a hipped roof, corner quoins, stone flat arches with keystones over windows, and a three-stage cupola that dominates the city skyline. Tall round-arched windows light the second-floor courtroom. The county's earlier courthouses included a log structure from 1760 and a building burned in 1858, followed by a replacement that burned in 1910. Interior renovations in 1948 added new lights, vinyl wall coverings and a terrazzo floor, yet original wooden doors, transoms, marble wainscot and iron stair railings remain. A 1965 annex adjoins the north side, and the building sits on a sparsely planted square.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Milburn and Heister","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still appears to serve as the county courthouse; interior renovated in 1948 and a 1965 annex added on the north side.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.504872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7183/47718335/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001745.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001745/dce6c63666-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001745/dce6c63666-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pitt_County_Courthouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pitt_County_Courthouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000419","name":"Greenville Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/greenville-commercial-historic-district-03000419/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718335","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitt_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987593"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/pitt-county/pitt-county-courthouse-79001745/"}
