The second-floor courtroom has stayed almost unchanged since 1878 and preserves the quality craftsmanship of its era. It was listed as part of a thematic group of North Carolina county courthouses.","narrative":"Hyde County Courthouse in Swan Quarter is a two-story, T-shaped building put up in the 1850s. It replaced an 1836 courthouse, the fourth in a series that followed the county seat from Bath to Woodstock, Germantown, Lake Landing and finally Swan Quarter. County court minutes do not name a designer or builder, and a committee appointed by the court probably planned it. The brick walls are now covered in stucco, and the eaves carry a corbelled cornice and turned brackets, probably added in 1878. Remodelings in 1878 and about 1909, and a heavy renovation in 1964, gave the building more Victorian than antebellum character. Later additions have weakened the original design. Its second-floor courtroom remains nearly as remodeled in 1878, with turned balusters, reeded rails, a judge's bench, jury area and original sawn spectator benches. As one of the few antebellum courthouses left in North Carolina, it was listed for its architecture and its role in county government.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian details on an antebellum core","criteria":[],"status_note":"Recent additions and renovations are described as poorly planned and as reducing the impact of the original building; the first floor interior has been altered, while the second-floor courtroom is largely intact.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.899129-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7180/47718015/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001726.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718015","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_County_Courthouse_(North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707978"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/hyde-county/hyde-county-courthouse-79001726/"}
