The county formed in 1758, built its first courthouse the following year and replaced it with a second in 1847. In 1909 the county commissioners hired the firm of Wheeler and Stern, financed construction with $40,000 in bonds, and completed the present building in 1910. A square core with a tetrastyle Corinthian portico is flanked by two-story wings, and a two-stage cupola with clocks on four sides rises above the mansard roof. Inside, cross halls divide the offices, and paneled doors, pressed tin ceilings and iron stair railings survive. The second-floor courtroom has been altered most, though its brass rail and classical bench remain. Towering over the small buildings around it, the courthouse serves as the town's landmark and is included in a thematic group of North Carolina courthouses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wheeler and Stern","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Interior remodelings have not severely altered the original character; the courtroom has the most extensive alterations, and a recent addition on the east side does not relate to the original building.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.905369-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7179/47717973/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001719.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001719/4f0ea7f06a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001719/4f0ea7f06a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Stanton – CC-BY-SA (see permission; all content licensed under CC-BY-SA)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Halifax_County_Courthouse_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Stanton – CC-BY-SA (see permission; all content licensed under CC-BY-SA)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Halifax_County_Courthouse_NC.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"70000456","name":"Halifax Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/halifax-historic-district-70000456/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717973","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_County_Courthouse_(North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5642154"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/halifax-county/halifax-county-courthouse-79001719/"}
