It retains its Greek Revival exterior, including a keystone dated July 4, 1838, and some early interior features. It is also the earliest building in its downtown area and was listed as part of a thematic group of North Carolina courthouses.","narrative":"Granville County Courthouse occupies a corner lot on Main Street in downtown Oxford. Granville County's first seat was Harrisburg, and a second courthouse was built in Oxford in 1820. In 1837 the county court ordered taxes raised for a new building, and it was completed in November 1839. The two-story brick Greek Revival structure is H-shaped, with a three-bay center pavilion, an arched entrance with fanlight and sidelights, and a keystone dated July 4, 1838. A polygonal cupola with a domed roof rises above. Flemish bond appears on the main facade and common bond elsewhere. Additions from 1891 and 1937 were blended in by a continuous masonry cornice. Inside, the spaces have been modernized and the courtroom remodeled, though Greek Revival doors and window surrounds survive. The building is one of the few antebellum courthouses in North Carolina still serving its original purpose, and it is the earliest building in its surroundings.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as the Granville County courthouse; enlarged in 1891 with an annex added in 1937; interior thoroughly remodeled.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.483995-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7179/47717921/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001710.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001710/0767f18abc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001710/0767f18abc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GRANVILLE_COUNTY_COURTHOUSE.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"88000403","name":"Oxford Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/oxford-historic-district-additional-documentation-88000403/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717921","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granville_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18706142"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/granville-county/granville-county-courthouse-79001710/"}
