Rogers of Charlotte and built by J. J. Stout.","why_significant":"The courthouse is presented as an excellent example of the late Neo-Classical Revival style, which reached its most sophisticated stage in North Carolina in the 1920s. Its restrained classical ornament, refined interior and little-altered courtroom are highlighted. It also replaced the county's first courthouse, built in 1844, on the same site.","narrative":"Catawba County's courthouse occupies the town square in Newton and dates to 1924, when it replaced an earlier brick courthouse built in 1844 and enlarged with vaulted wings in 1904. County commissioners decided in 1923 that the old building's offices were too small and chose to rebuild on the same site. Charlotte architect Rogers prepared the plans, J. J. Stout built it, and the cost was about $250,000. The two-story granite-veneered building has a taller, more ornate central block with round-arched windows, engaged Ionic columns, a balustrade and a rock-faced base. Entrances on all four sides carry a seal of justice. Inside, wide cross halls meet at a polygonal center, and an elliptical marble stair rises beneath a stained glass skylight. The little-altered courtroom has Corinthian pilasters, reliefs of Blind Justice and original furnishings. The building is valued as a refined example of late Neo-Classical Revival design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect William G. Rogers (also given as Willard G.
