It also recalls Frederick Law Olmsted's original town plan, which joined residential and commercial areas through common architectural characteristics.","narrative":"At 8 Lodge Street in Biltmore Village stands a small one-and-one-half story commercial building from about 1900, apparently designed by architect Richard Sharp Smith. Its clipped gable-end facade is two bays wide and carries the original pebbledash walls and vertical half-timbering, which continues into the gable beneath a molded overhanging cornice. An exterior brick chimney rises at the ridgeline, and the east bay has four sash windows with diamond-pattern glazing in the upper sections. The east side also has a shed dormer and an interior brick chimney. The building matters as one of the few surviving commercial examples of Smith's work for George W. Vanderbilt's planned village, where he designed all of the residential and most of the commercial structures. It shows how he adapted his standard motifs, especially pebbledash and half-timbering, to a small shop. It also reflects Frederick Law Olmsted's town plan, which separated residential and commercial areas yet tied them together with shared architectural character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richard Sharp Smith (apparently)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.456205-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7172/47717292/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/79001669.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001669/3ca807c07c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001669/3ca807c07c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Biltmore_Shoe_Store.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Biltmore_Shoe_Store.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717292","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biltmore_Shoe_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17985907"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/buncombe-county/biltmore-shoe-store-79001669/"}
