It is distinguished by an unusual crowning cupola. Together with the nearby old jail, it forms a functioning county complex representing Avery County's past and future.","narrative":"Avery County Courthouse is a two-story brick building at one end of the town park in Newland, North Carolina. Avery County was created in 1911, and commissioners chose Newland as the courthouse site. Charlotte architects Wheeler and Runge designed the Neo-Classical Revival structure in the Beaux Arts manner, and R. C. Campbell of Caldwell built it for $25,800. Construction began in 1912 and finished in May 1913. The main facade has five parts, with a hipped-roof central core topped by an oblong mansard cupola and fronted by a tetrastyle Ionic portico. It is one of six surviving courthouses by Wheeler and his associates. Rear and side additions, including work in 1974, blend with the original block, and the second-floor courtroom keeps its original furnishings. The old jail nearby now serves as a county museum and offices, so the courthouse still anchors a working county complex.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wheeler and Runge of Charlotte (architects); R.
