It was designed by Buchman and Deisler and built in 1894-95.","why_significant":"The nomination calls Estherwood the only extant example of the Chateauesque style in Westchester County and the lone survivor of the many large estates that once dominated the Dobbs Ferry hillsides. It is also valued because it has remained essentially unaltered, with rich interior materials and detailing. Its link to James Jennings McComb, a patron of The Masters School, adds to its importance.","narrative":"Estherwood is a three-and-a-half-story Chateauesque mansion on the grounds of The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, built in 1894-95 to designs by Buchman and Deisler for James Jennings McComb. McComb, whose fortune came from a patented cotton bale tie, had an octagonal library built for a desk he bought in Europe, then had his earlier house moved and a grander residence built around the library. The house is white pressed brick with granite and terra-cotta trim, a tile roof with copper cresting, a porte cochere and a veranda with Guastavino tile ceilings. Inside are a two-story Great Hall, richly carved and decorated formal rooms, and an original attic structure. A Queen Anne carriage house stands nearby. Estherwood is the only surviving Chateauesque building in Westchester County and the last of the large estates that once covered Dobbs Ferry's hillsides. The school bought it in 1910, and it remains largely unchanged.","period_of_significance":"1894-95","architect_builder":"Buchman and Deisler","architectural_style":"Chateauesque (carriage house: Queen Anne massing with a Stick style porte cochere)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and owned by The Masters School; the mansion is used as a reception hall and staff apartments, and was long used as a dormitory.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.745378-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001646.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001646/92cb248020-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001646/92cb248020-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Estherwood,_Dobbs_Ferry,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Estherwood,_Dobbs_Ferry,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323017","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estherwood_(Dobbs_Ferry,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5401335"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/estherwood-and-carriage-house-79001646/"}
