Buildings date from 1770 to about 1885.","why_significant":"The district illustrates the development of architectural styles in rural Washington County, from colonial and Federal through Greek Revival and Queen Anne. Settled by Quakers in the late 1700s, the hamlet prospered as a farming and commercial center, peaking in the 1840s. Rare Greek Revival commercial buildings survive, and later economic decline left the historic fabric largely intact.","narrative":"White Creek is a crossroads hamlet in the southeastern corner of Washington County, New York, close to the Vermont line. Its historic district takes in twenty-two properties built between 1770 and about 1885, most of them timber-framed, clapboard-sided buildings with gable roofs. Quakers settled the area in the late eighteenth century, and John Allen built the first permanent house in 1770; it remains the best-preserved eighteenth-century structure in the hamlet. The hamlet became a regional commercial center, reaching its peak of prosperity in the 1840s. That period left rare rural Greek Revival commercial buildings, including a hotel and tavern, a harness shop now serving as the fire station, and the three-story Dyer Sisson general store. Merchants' homes in Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival and Queen Anne styles show how local tastes changed. Later shifts in transportation bypassed the community, which helped preserve its architecture with only two modern intrusions.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, with Georgian, Federal and Queen Anne examples","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is described as good and altered; the district is mostly residential and still contains a fire station, a general store, a church and a community hall, with two modern intrusions.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:40.048726-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001644.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001644/b4656f3efa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001644/b4656f3efa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White_Creek_Historic_District_John_Allen_House_Nov_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White_Creek_Historic_District_John_Allen_House_Nov_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322880","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Creek_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7994622"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/washington-county/white-creek-historic-district-79001644/"}
