Route 443) in the center of Gallupville, Town of Wright, Schoharie County, New York. It was built in 1872-1873 on the site of an earlier hotel.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant for its association with the commercial, social and political life of the village. It is a fine example of vernacular hotel architecture, one of few remaining in the area, and reflects the modest prosperity the town had as a stopover for travellers between Albany, Schoharie and Binghamton.","narrative":"Built in 1872-1873 in the center of Gallupville, this two-and-one-half-story wood frame building began as a hotel serving travellers on routes linking Albany, Schoharie and Binghamton. It replaced an earlier hotel, begun in 1833, that burned in 1871. The square main block has five bays, a bracketed cornice with dentils, a hipped tin roof and a large square cupola. A full-width front porch and a two-story rear addition from 1890 complete the structure. In 1920 the Orion Lodge of the Odd Fellows bought it and rebuilt the interior as a hall with a stage, and the town rented the ground level for voting and meetings. The Grange later used the hall until the town bought it in 1967. When a new municipal building opened in 1974, community interest saved the building from demolition. It is regarded as a fine example of vernacular hotel architecture and a long-standing focal point of village life.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular hotel architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant, and noted as under restoration; the exterior has been maintained as originally built, though the sheds and barns have been demolished.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.602978-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001629.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001629/ef08b6dddd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001629/ef08b6dddd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallupville_House_Sep_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallupville_House_Sep_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321741","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallupville_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5519238"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/gallupville-house-79001629/"}
