The earliest section was built in 1755 by William Edmonston.","why_significant":"The house is a good example of eighteenth-century regional architecture, with two sections that invite comparison and retain much original fabric. During the Continental Army's 1782-1783 encampment it housed staff officers, including Generals Gates and St. Clair, and stored hospital supplies. The surrounding area is also likely to yield archaeological resources.","narrative":"Edmonston House is a stone dwelling on Route 94 at Vails Gate in Orange County, New York. Its western section, and possibly the rear wing, dates to 1755, when William Edmonston, son of one of the area's earliest settlers, built it. A later addition made it a double house. The walls are coursed rubble, and the interior keeps mid-eighteenth-century features such as a paneled stairhall, heavy ceiling beams, large fireplaces, and a bake oven. The western half is more refined than the eastern. The house also has a Revolutionary War story. During the Continental Army's 1782-1783 encampment near New Windsor, Generals Horatio Gates and Arthur St. Clair stayed here, and the building held hospital stores. William Edmonston was later listed for house rent and damages owed by the Army. It remains one of few early stone houses left in the New Windsor area, and it shows how the region's first settlers lived and built.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"William Edmonston","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, occupied, with missing or deteriorated elements carefully restored from physical evidence; owned by a historical association and used as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.953112-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001616.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001616/e13f1f7954-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001616/e13f1f7954-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonston_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonston_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320641","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonston_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5338975"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/edmonston-house-79001616/"}
