It is reputed to have been built by Polaski King.","why_significant":"The house is one of few surviving early Federal-style buildings in Syracuse, with Flemish bond brickwork and refined Neoclassical detailing. It reflects the early settlement of Onondaga Hollow and is tied to Polaski King, a landowner and civic leader. It was also the first building designated by the city's Landmarks Preservation Board.","narrative":"Set on Valley Drive in Onondaga Hollow, just south of Syracuse's urban core, this two-story brick house dates to about 1810. Its front elevation is five bays wide, with a Neoclassical entry door, sidelights, a semi-elliptical fanlight and a triple window above. The walls are laid in Flemish bond on a limestone foundation, and a rear brick wing holds a large cooking fireplace. A clapboard addition was made around 1860. The house is tied to Polaski King, a major landowner, Justice of the Peace and gentleman farmer who founded the Masonic Order in the Hollow in 1803, the first regular school in 1807, and the Onondaga Valley Cemetery in 1819. The Hollow was settled in 1788, before Syracuse was founded, and still keeps a rural character. Federal-style buildings are rare in Syracuse, and this one was the first designated by the city's Landmarks Preservation Board. At the time of listing it stood abandoned, with its mantelpieces and stair rail held for reinstallation.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (reputedly built by Polaski King)","architectural_style":"Federal (Federal Neoclassical)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as presently abandoned; interior features such as mantelpieces and the stair rail were removed for safekeeping and are to be returned upon restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.269591-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001614.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001614/96369fa4c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001614/96369fa4c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PolaskiKingHouseSite.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PolaskiKingHouseSite.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320380","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polaski_King_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7209194"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/king-polaski-house-79001614/"}
