A cemetery established in 1810 and its stone walls and fences are included in the nomination.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the only church in Onondaga County to survive virtually unaltered from the Federal period. Its design combines the simplicity of an eighteenth-century New England meeting house with later features such as the engaged tower, belfry and bell-shaped dome. It is also significant for its role in the religious life of the community, including a congregation founded in 1805 and a split in 1838.","narrative":"Delphi Baptist Church, also known as Delphi Falls United Church, is a frame meeting house on Oran-Delphi Road in Delphi Falls, in the town of Pompey, Onondaga County. Its congregation formed in 1805, voted in 1815 to build on the site of an existing cemetery, and financed construction by selling pews at prices from $25 to $140. The building was finished in 1818. It measures forty-five by fifty-four feet, with clapboard siding, a central engaged tower, octagonal stages, a bell-shaped dome and a clock made in 1847. Inside are a balcony, twenty-over-twenty windows and white painted pews. A dispute in 1838 led conservative members to leave and form a Primitive Baptist Society, and the pews were rearranged that year. Membership fell in the twentieth century, and in 1952 the Baptists joined the Methodists to form the United Church. The nomination describes it as the only virtually unaltered Federal period church in Onondaga County.","period_of_significance":"1815-1818","architect_builder":"Unknown (no known architect; much labor probably donated by the congregation)","architectural_style":"New England style meeting house with Federal period character","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in fair condition, unaltered, on its original site, and used for worship by the Delphi Falls United Church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.149709-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001610.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001610/4b21bfdfbf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001610/4b21bfdfbf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DelphiBaptistChurch_profile_sm.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DelphiBaptistChurch_profile_sm.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320328","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5254395"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/delphi-baptist-church-79001610/"}
