It is also significant for its Jacobethan Revival main house and well-designed outbuildings by noted architects. Its lavishly planted grounds evolved under Coe's close supervision into a horticultural showplace.","narrative":"Planting Fields Arboretum occupies 409 acres near Oyster Bay on Long Island, once the country estate of William Robertson Coe. Land first cultivated by the Matinecock Indians later became Quaker farms and then asparagus fields. In 1904 the James Byrne family bought farmland here, and Coe acquired the estate in 1913. Guy Lowell enlarged the greenhouses and remodeled the garden house in 1915. After the Byrne residence burned in 1918, Walker and Gillette designed Coe Hall, a Jacobethan Revival house of cut stone and half timbering finished in 1920, with interiors overseen by Charles of London. The firm also designed the stables, garage, gate house and laundry. Fred Dawson of the Olmsted Brothers laid out the heather garden and main road. Coe also brought the eighteenth-century Carshalton Gates from England. He deeded the property to New York State in 1949 for educational use, and it now operates as a public horticultural center.","period_of_significance":"1915-1920's","architect_builder":"Guy Lowell, Walker and Gillette, Olmsted Brothers","architectural_style":"American Jacobethan Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the State of New York, in good condition, occupied and open to the public as an arboretum and educational and cultural center.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.661373-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001598.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001598/8a2ec3dfb8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001598/8a2ec3dfb8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"GK tramrunner229","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CoeHall5579.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">GK tramrunner229</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CoeHall5579.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319177","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planting_Fields_Arboretum_State_Historic_Park","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12065968"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/planting-fields-arboretum-79001598/"}
