The original stone house was built in 1730 and enlarged in 1760 and remodeled in 1823.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its ties to the early history of the Catskill-Leeds area and the spread of Dutch settlement in the upper Hudson Valley. It illustrates vernacular Dutch building traditions adopted by an English family and the later loss of that character in the early nineteenth century. It contains high quality features from three architectural eras and is the only one of three Salisbury stone houses that survives.","narrative":"Set on a rise about fifty feet above the flats of Catskill Creek, west of Leeds, this fieldstone house with brick gables began in 1730 as a one-and-a-half-story Dutch-style dwelling built by Francis Salisbury for his son Abraham and Abraham's wife, Rachel Ten Eyck. Two more rooms and a second story were added in 1760, giving it a Georgian-influenced form, and in 1823 a nephew, also named Abraham Salisbury, raised the roof plates, laid brick gables and added Federal-style trim, mantels and window reveals. The house keeps eighteenth-century paneling, a Georgian mantel and original Dutch beams. The Salisburys were an English family, descended from an officer who helped take New Netherland in 1664, who married into Dutch families. Later the house served as a boarding house and a summer residence. Only this one of three Salisbury stone houses remains. The nominated area includes a lane lined with stone walls, lilacs and locust trees, and the view toward the creek.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Francis Salisbury","architectural_style":"Dutch vernacular stone house with Georgian (1760) and Federal (1823) elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied private residence in good condition and altered; grounds include a garage, shed, tennis courts and a granary ruin.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.970214-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001585.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001585/0c093ce02d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001585/0c093ce02d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Manor_03-26-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Manor_03-26-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318043","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salisbury_Manor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7404784"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/salisbury-manor-79001585/"}
