Its full-height portico and setting against Potick Mountain have made it a local landmark for more than 125 years. The site is also thought to have archeological potential.","narrative":"Set on high ground at the foot of Potick Mountain, about a mile and a half from the village of Leeds in Greene County, this farmhouse grew in three stages. A stone basement and a one-and-a-half-story frame house came first in the eighteenth century. A two-story Federal addition followed, probably by the 1820s, and a full-height Greek Revival portico with four Doric columns was added in the mid-nineteenth century. The land traces to a 1675 purchase by Jan Bronck, and the farm worked nearby Catskill Creek flats. Martin G. Schuneman, a congressman, likely built the Federal wing before his death in 1827. Abraham H. Newkirk bought the house and 270 acres in 1849, and his descendants held it until 1943. Their long ownership helps explain why so little has changed. The nominated parcel of twenty acres includes the house, a corn crib, two barns and a barn foundation, and protects the open views across the farm.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival (vernacular Dutch-influenced frame core)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; the form notes few changes over time, though the two-story wing has never had bathrooms, a kitchen or central heating added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.457202-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001584.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001584/5af96b047f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001584/5af96b047f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newkirk_Homestead_03-26-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newkirk_Homestead_03-26-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318007","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newkirk_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7018282"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/newkirk-homestead-79001584/"}
