Pierson and remodeled in 1927, with a carriage house at the rear of the lot.","why_significant":"The house was the lifelong home of Calvin N. Keeney, a horticulturist who bred the stringless bean, and of his daughter Ruth Keeney, a local benefactor. It is also significant architecturally: a late Federal house given Greek Revival details, then remodeled in 1927 by Buffalo architect Bryant Fleming into a Federal Revival design. It is regarded as the most imposing home in downtown LeRoy.","narrative":"Set on a terraced lot in downtown LeRoy, this white clapboard house at 13 West Main Street was built in 1851 by local builder Philo L. Pierson for John G. Bixby. Its five-bay facade began as a late Federal design with Greek Revival ornament, including Doric pilasters and window cornices. In 1927 Buffalo architect Bryant Fleming renovated it in the Federal Revival style, removing the three-dimensional Greek details and the turn-of-the-century veranda, adding an elliptical fanlight, and terracing the front lawn. Inside, a long central hall, a grand staircase and Greek-style mantels survive. A large carriage house with a latticework cupola stands at the rear. The house is closely tied to the Keeney family. Calvin N. Keeney, who bought it in 1881, bred seventeen varieties of stringless bean and founded local canning and salt companies. His daughter Ruth Keeney became a notable LeRoy benefactor and helped organize the LeRoy Historical Society.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Philo Pierson, builder; Bryant Fleming (1927 renovation)","architectural_style":"Late Federal with Greek Revival detailing; remodeled in 1927 in Federal Revival style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; the carriage house is also in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.738344-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001583.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001583/02d3db6d00-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001583/02d3db6d00-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keeney_House_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keeney_House_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317899","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeney_House_(Le_Roy,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6382913"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/genesee-county/keeney-house-79001583/"}
