It also documents the life of the Hudson Valley freeholder and the Lutheran van Hoesen family of Claverack. The form rates it of state significance.","narrative":"Built around 1720 beside Claverack Creek in Columbia County, this brick house was the home of Jan van Hoesen and his wife Tanneke. It belongs to a small group of about seven surviving brick dwellings of the early eighteenth century in the Dutch style of old Albany County. Features include a steep roof, gable chimneys, a thin engaged chimney flue serving cellar and main-floor fireplaces, wrought-iron fleur-de-lis beam anchors, and a panelled stair. A monogram of the van Hoesens' initials in black headers survives in the east gable, and decorative flat arches of red and blackened brick are described as rare. Some openings, the roof, and the partitions have been altered. The family were Lutheran freeholders who held land at Claverack Landing, later the city of Hudson, and Jan also worked as a mariner. The house is valued as an intact example of Hudson Valley freeholder housing, and archeological remains are thought likely nearby.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1720","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Dutch colonial (Albany County Dutch brick house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, unoccupied, in fair and deteriorated condition, and altered.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.58736-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79001570.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001570/bf324053f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79001570/bf324053f2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Rickster77","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VanHoesenHouse_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rickster77</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VanHoesenHouse_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317105","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Van_Hoesen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6150106"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/van-hoesen-jan-house-79001570/"}
