It was identified by the Illinois Historic Structures Survey as one of roughly 150 outstanding examples of the style in the state. It is also significant as the work and home of Robert Milne, a prominent mid-nineteenth century Lockport citizen.","narrative":"Built around 1840 on the edge of Lockport, Illinois, this two-story limestone house was the home of master mason Robert Milne, a native of Banffshire, Scotland. Milne arrived in Lockport in 1840, took contracts on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, built five of its locks, and was later appointed Canal Commissioner. The main section has cut ashlar street and garden facades, a stone cornice, a low hipped roof and two interior brick chimneys, with two rear additions made before 1873. Inside are original pine floors, Greek Revival door and window surrounds, two mantelpieces and a walnut staircase with a Greek vase newel post. The grounds include an English-style front garden with trees planted by Milne, an early stone milk house and a hand-dug well. The house is considered an excellent example of plain Federal style construction and one of about 150 outstanding examples in Illinois. Four generations of Milnes lived there.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Robert Milne","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the interior and exterior are described as exceptionally well preserved, with some alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.884282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/8943/28894311/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79000876.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000876/35332e2214-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000876/35332e2214-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MilneHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08 at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MilneHouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"11000907","name":"Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/illinois/chicago-sanitary-and-ship-canal-historic-district-11000907/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894311","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Milne_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7347701"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/will-county/milne-robert-house-79000876/"}
