It also marks the home of John H. Addams, a prominent businessman, state senator and Republican Party organizer, and the birthplace of his daughter Jane Addams.","narrative":"This homestead on North Mill Street in Cedarville includes a two-and-one-half story brick house, a three-and-one-half story Pennsylvania bank-type barn, and the remains of a gristmill along Cedar Creek. John H. Addams built the house in two stages, the northern part in 1846 and the southern part with the central entrance in 1854, adding an Italianate bay and chimney in the 1870s. Of the mill, only limestone foundations, the dam and the mill race remain. Addams arrived from Pennsylvania in 1844 and bought the Cedar Creek Mills in 1845, which grew into one of the largest grist, saw and linseed mills in northern Illinois. He also served as a bank president, railroad director, abolitionist and Republican state senator from 1854 to 1870, and corresponded with Abraham Lincoln. His home housed the area's first public library. His daughter Jane, later founder of Hull House and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was born here.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (house, with Italianate bay); Pennsylvania bank-type barn","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the mill survives only as foundations, dam and mill race.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.489179-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/8941/28894174/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79000871.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000871/acbdf8f73a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000871/acbdf8f73a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedarville_Il_Addams_Homestead5.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedarville_Il_Addams_Homestead5.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894174","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_H._Addams_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6236698"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/stephenson-county/addams-john-h-homestead-79000871/"}
