It is also tied to Howard K. Weber, a Civil War commissary sergeant who became president of First National Bank.","narrative":"This two-story, L-shaped brick house at 925 South Seventh Street in Springfield began as a small dwelling of the 1840s or earlier and grew through five to seven additions. Its present exterior dates from the 1870s and shows Italianate features: bracketed eaves, a low hip roof, arched windows and a two-story bay with Corinthian columns. Howard K. Weber, a Maryland native who served as a commissary sergeant at Camp Butler during the Civil War and later headed First National Bank, bought the house in 1878. As he prospered, he extended and redecorated it, adding parquet floors, a Romanesque Revival stairway, stained glass and frescoed ceilings in 1893. The house is one of the few intact great homes remaining in the former \"Aristocrat Hill\" neighborhood near the Governor's Mansion. A Gothic Revival carriage house also survives. Together they illustrate how a house changed with its owners' rising fortunes and with late Victorian taste.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1870's","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate (Italianate Villa), with Gothic Revival carriage house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as good condition, private residence; interior ceilings and decoration were being restored at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.714147-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/8940/28894028/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79000868.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000868/7184d2f4a2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000868/7184d2f4a2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howard_K._Weber_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howard_K._Weber_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894028","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_K._Weber_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20710188"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/sangamon-county/weber-howard-k-house-79000868/"}
